Every week a couple asks me the same question: is it worth leaving the city for the wedding? My honest answer after seventeen years of planning weddings across Victoria is that the venue matters far more than the postcode. A vineyard in the Yarra Valley that sits empty on a Saturday evening gives you something a CBD rooftop simply cannot, which is silence. No traffic, no adjacent function, no stranger in a lift on the way to your first look. That alone changes the feel of the entire day, and I have never once had a couple regret the drive. The venues I keep sending couples to tend to fall into three groups. First, the working vineyards between Coldstream and Healesville, where the ceremony sits between the rows and the cellar door does the catering. Second, the coastal properties along the Mornington Peninsula, particularly around Red Hill and Flinders, where the light at 7pm is genuinely better than anything you will find inland. Third, and this surprises people, a handful of converted warehouses in Fitzroy and Collingwood that have quietly become some of the most photogenic reception spaces in the state. Each category has a different budget profile, and it is usually the ceiling height and the hire inclusions that separate a good venue from an expensive one. What I would tell you to actually check on a site visit, beyond the obvious, is three things. Ask how many events run in the same building on the same day, because a venue that runs two weddings side by side will inevitably blur the edges of yours. Ask what time the band has to stop, and what that actually means for the last hour of your night. And ask for a copy of the current run sheet from their last wedding, not the glossy one they hand to couples. That last one tells you more about how the place operates than any brochure ever will. If you are stuck between a city venue and a regional one, my suggestion is to spend a Saturday doing both in a single day, starting at the wine region in the morning and finishing in the city that evening.
